UPS upgrades European network with tech-driven Dutch Superhub in Brainport Eindhoven
UPS officially opened a new automated package sorting and delivery facility in Brainport Eindhoven, the Netherlands, which facilitates cross-border trade while enhancing package delivery service for businesses small and large.

UPS officially opened a new automated package sorting and delivery facility in Brainport Eindhoven, the Netherlands, which facilitates cross-border trade while enhancing package delivery service for businesses small and large. The 27,000 square meter superhub – approximately five football fields in size – is equipped with advanced technology that can sort up to 29,000 packages per hour, with the potential to expand to 40,000 per hour. The opening also highlights UPS’s Women Exporters Program, part of a wider project to add 3 million women exporters to the global economy.

Cesarone: “This tech-enabled facility provides fast and efficient connections to UPS’s smart global logistics network that moves 3% of the world’s GDP every day. Worldwide, more than 80% of tech start-ups are global from day one – they’re micro-multinationals – because they leverage digital platforms for instant access to world markets. And our network is an engine for inclusive trade that enables growth from all parts of the economy, including women-owned businesses. Their businesses are, on average, more than 3.5 times more productive than those not exporting. There is a return on investment waiting for us all: Women hold the potential to increase global annual GDP by $28 trillion by 2025.”
Brainport Eindhoven is strategically located in a region whose key industries include high tech and healthcare. The facility is a transit hub for goods traveling through the region and helps ensure the fast and reliable flow of goods between Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.

And of course they need to get their products to their clients the best way possible. The smart logistics connections in this part of Europe are attractive to companies looking for the opportunities that a global network like UPS’s offers.”
Part of the economic agenda in the Netherlands focuses on sustainable growth. UPS actively supports more inclusive global trade with an international effort to help women business owners learn more about exporting. It’s called the UPS Women Exporters Program. UPS is focused on capacity-building for small and medium enterprises or SMEs, especially women-owned SMEs, to help them become more competitive suppliers and trade partners with multinationals.
The UPS Foundation is partnering with the International Trade Centre (ITC) and their SheTrades initiative, which helps to train and connect women entrepreneurs with buyers around the world. For example, through SheTrades Argentina, UPS will work with Argentina’s Department of Economic Development to establish workshops to provide access to markets, knowledge and technical proficiency to women entrepreneurs. Similar programs are underway in Nigeria, Vietnam, the UAE and Mexico. ITC and UPS aim to connect 3 million women to the global marketplace by 2021. In addition, UPS is organizing a July-September series of export training seminars in Turkey for female entrepreneurs with Kadın Girişimciler Derneği (KAGIDER) and Kadın Emeğini Değerlendirme Vakfı (KEDV).
UPS is also helping businesses of all sizes to build and maintain world-class supply chains with seamless international connections. The new facility in Eindhoven has miles of conveyors and is equipped with UPS’s automated package sorting technology to increase the speed of packages moving through the facility.
The new €130 million facility is a part of the company’s multi-year, $2 billion European investment plan, which aims to modernize and expand the UPS network across the continent. Over the past four years, ground time in transit reductions of up to one day from the Netherlands to 25 European countries have made further contributions to UPS’s ever-increasing European transborder connectivity.
As part of its wider transformation strategy, UPS is prioritizing resources and directing investment for the greatest strategic benefit and long-term shareholder return. Early in 2017, the company announced plans for extensive upgrades to its smart global logistics network, enhancing capacity and efficiency through the use of state-of-the-art processes, information technology and automation. Highly automated, high-capacity superhubs like the new Eindhoven facility create more options to manage growing operating volumes.
UPS has been offering service in the Netherlands since 1985 and currently has 16 facilities across the country. Near Eindhoven, UPS has 66,000 square meters of dedicated healthcare facilities in Venlo and Roermond, offering customers services such as temperature control, a formal quality management system and a compliance program.
