The Brainport region, with Eindhoven at its heart, plays a crucial role in the global R&D operation of Bosch Security Systems. The leading supplier of security, safety and communication products employs about 200 R&D staff in the city – a number that keeps growing. HR Director Rindert Kroos: “There is an enormous amount of technical talent in this region, which is the main reason why we keep expanding our R&D presence here.”
Most consumers will associate Bosch with power tools and household appliances. But, in fact, the German engineering and technology powerhouse gets most of its revenue from B2B activities. That’s also where Bosch Security Systems fits in. The business unit provides video surveillance, fire detection, access control and voice evacuation systems to help make buildings, infrastructure, airports and retail organizations more safe and secure.
The availability of technical talent is the main reason why Bosch Security Systems keeps expanding its presence in Brainport Eindhoven, one of Europe’s leading high-tech regions. The company works closely together with the Eindhoven University of Technology and the IT branch of Fontys University of Applied Sciences.
Also the Technical university of Delft is within reach. “But we also appeal to students from Aachen or Leuven. The central location and proximity to great Dutch, German and Belgian universities is an absolute advantage to us. Like any high-tech company, we are always looking for technical talent.”
Bosch Security Systems is an active contributor to the high-tech ecosystem in Brabant and the Netherlands. For years, it has been partnering with Dutch Technology Week (DTW) alongside other technology leaders, government and knowledge institutions. “We play an active role during DTW, for example by hosting a software hackathon and our Audio & Video challenge in the past. It’s a great platform to present our company to potential talent and showcase what we are capable of.”
As an inhabitant of one of Europe’s most vibrant high-tech regions, Bosch Security Systems is sometimes presented with unique opportunities. Kroos: “It’s important to keep our ears and eyes open”.
Bosch Security Systems’ ability to attract talent in the Netherlands is remarkable within the global organization. “Bosch invested in the new established start-up company Security and Safety Things (S&ST) in Munich in 2017 and in 2018, we managed to take over 15 good software developers for S&ST focusing on a new software platform for security cameras. As of 1-1-2021 we established the new legal entity Security and Safety Things BV located at the 10th floor of our building at Strijp S.”
“Software development is becoming increasingly important within our company. Towards our headquarters in Germany, it’s an important and hopeful signal that the Eindhoven site is able to attract talent so quickly.”
In that light, Kroos emphasizes the strong relationship with BOM Foreign Investments. “BOM has been supporting us very well for years. For instance, they provide us with great in-depth analyses into the investment climate. How does Brainport Eindhoven compare with other European regions? This is important information to our board in Munich. Our close partnership with BOM only contributes to our pleasant stay here in Brabant."
